This means you can hold them for a long time and bend them slightly to fit them in your bag. Paperbacks are often an easier option for reading and transporting, because they’re a lot lighter and more flexible than hardback books. Hardback books also include endpapers, which are an additional sheet of paper between the cover and the inside pages, acting as another barrier against potential damage. This makes them a lot less likely to bend, and keeps the pages from getting frayed. On average in the UK, hardback books prices range from £15-£20, whereas you can pick up a paperback book for around a fiver.ĭue to their thick board cover, hardback books are far more durable than their paperback counterparts. Hardcover books are more expensive to produce than softcover books, however they also often retail at a higher price. Now we’ve got a clearer idea of what paperback and hardback books are, let’s recap the key differences between them. They are also less likely to become damaged over time, making them a great option for special edition publications. The paper cover is the part where the design is printed, and the thick cardboard case is what reinforces it.Īlthough more expensive to produce, hardback books are far stronger and more durable than paperback books. What elevates this style of book is its distinctive hardcover, which is usually made from a material called greyboard – a thick cardboard case with a paper cover glued over it. Like paperback books, hardback books (also known as hardcover books) are made from a ‘book block’ which is the inside pages glued together at the binding edge. It also means that the production of this type of book is cheaper! Because they’re bound to a paper cover, this makes the books a lot lighter and more flexible, which in turn makes them easier to hold, read and fit into a bag for travel. The inside pages are usually stitched together, before being glued to a cover. This type of book has a much thinner cover than a hardback book, usually made from thicker paper or card than the inside pages. In this quick guide, we’ll weigh up the benefits of both paperback books and hardcover books to help you come to the right decision.Ī paperback book, also known as a softcover or softback book, is characterised by its cover. Check out the recommendations below to build long-lasting floral arrangements you can enjoy for months on end. So how do you get your garden to look gorgeous all summer? We’ve pulled together a list of perennials that will boast beautiful blossoms throughout the entire summer and return year after year with an abundance of color and fragrance. For a more interesting-looking flower bed, be sure to incorporate a variety of heights, a cohesive color scheme, and flowering plants that thrive in varying amounts of sunlight. And after all that work, there is nothing worse than looking at a bare garden. In fact, many perennial plants, those that you do not need to replant every year, have relatively short flowering seasons, leaving your garden looking a little bare for a good portion of the summer. If you want your flower beds and garden to bloom for longer than a few weeks, you can't just plant seeds without care and expect month-long results. Gardening is a lot of work, but it can be well worth it if you do a little homework before you start digging. How to propagate lucky bamboo in 5 easy steps so you don’t have to buy it How to prune a dracaena marginata (dragon tree) so your plant stays thriving The best spider repellents so you can keep your home pest-free Ranked: The 7 best indoor plants to decorate your home with in November The best tall indoor plants to liven up your living room With one or all of the low-maintenance plants on our list, you can bring a touch of nature into your home to brighten up the dark and chilly winter days. They don’t require bright or direct sunlight, the dry air won’t weaken them, and they don’t need to be watered all that often. Resilient indoor plants are perfect additions to your home, especially in the winter when you miss the lush greenery of the summer months. As long as the roots don’t stay wet for too long and start to rot, this attractive plant will thrive in any home. It can survive bright light, low light, or even no light for a while, and it will remain just as lush and sturdy as ever. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it’s one of the most durable ones on this list. This unique-looking plant is adored for its spikey leaves and trendy appearance. While it requires some light throughout the winter, it’s totally fine with shadier areas and will thrive just about anywhere in your home. It prefers to dry out for a few days between watering sessions, so a forgetful mind is actually a good thing for this resilient plant. The lush Chinese evergreen is one tough cookie and can last up to a decade in your home. Super low-maintenance, you rarely need to water this plant, and it likes bright but indirect sunlight, so it grows well in any room with natural light. You can cut off its spikey leaves, cut them open, and use the gel inside as a topical treatment for burns and scrapes. Though it’s technically a type of succulent, aloe vera has some great health benefits that other succulents don’t. Succulents also love bright light, so they enjoy being on the windowsill as much as you enjoy putting them there. In fact, watering them more than a couple of times a month can lead to plant rot. Popular on windowsills and office desks, succulents are sturdy plants that retain water so well that infrequent watering is actually preferred. Best of all, the spider plant produces what many call “babies.” New plants develop on the plant’s runners which you can remove or repot once they develop roots. While it likes bright light, it can survive low-light conditions, and it tends to retain moisture well so it won’t wilt or dry up after a few missed watering sessions. The plant looks gorgeous in a hanging basket or upon a mantel since its leaves droop down. Getting its name from the arachnid leg-like shape of its leaves, the spider plant draws the eye with its voluminous, skinny leaves. Their decision to trust such a system isn’t taken lightly, and that is likely why we’ve seen self-driving buses take longer to show up on the road. While the owner of a modern car may choose to take their life into their own hands by trusting a self-driving system, transit operators and their drivers can’t be so cavalier. Companies are also juicy targets for litigation, and transit drivers care strongly about the safety of their passengers. However, it bears noting the stakes are higher – there’s a lot more people on board a bus that will suffer the results of any poor driving decisions, and a bus running over a car does a lot more damage. Overall, the basic technologies used for self-driving cars and self-driving buses are by and large the same. In much the same way that self-driving cars promise to revolutionize personal transport, self-driving buses aim to do the same for public transit. The Co-Design Panel recommended the “bus captain” concept to ease passengers that may have questions or concerns about using an autonomous bus, as well as developing materials to communicate how the bus will work to the broader public. “I wasn’t worried at all about it,” said Fleur, adding “You wouldn’t know the difference between this and a normal bus from the driving.” Given the concerns around the sometimes-erratic nature of certain “self-driving” systems, that’s almost a glowing endorsement. According to one rider, the experience was, by and large, just like catching a regular bus. Credit: StagecoachĪn initial trial run took place with Stagecoach’s Co-Design Panel, a group of local bus users that the company consults on service and equipment projects. Buses on the AB1 route will stop at every bus stop, which eliminates the requirement for the bus to detect hailing passengers. While this person is hailing the bus, there is no need. Beyond that, the buses will also be staffed with a “bus captain” who can assist passengers with ticketing, boarding, and alighting the vehicle. A human driver will remain on board as a monitor for safety reasons, and in part to comply with UK regulations. This means there is no need for the human driver to pay attention or keep their hands on the wheel at all times, but the bus can only drive like this in select limited areas. The buses will be capable of SAE Level 4 self-driving. The buses are capable of driving at up to 50 mph, and have been developed to operate autonomously in mixed traffic. To avoid having to develop a “hailing detection system,” the bus simply stops at every bus stop along its route. Notably, though, passengers won’t have to worry about hailing the bus. When it scales to full-time service in the spring, the five autonomous buses involved in the project will have the capacity to take on approximately 10,000 journeys a week. Unlike some smaller-scale trials, AB1 is set to be a regular timetabled service open to members of the public, just like any other regular bus route. Also involved are Transport Scotland, as well as Edinburg Napier University, Bristol Robotics Lab, and the University of the West of England. The project is being undertaken as a partnership between transit operator Stagecoach, autonomous driving company Fusion Processing, and bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis. The bus service itself has been duly designated “AB1”, standing for “Autonomous Bus 1,” and will be the first full-sized autonomous bus operating on public roads in the UK. The initial route is a 14-mile run between Fife and Edinburgh Park, which crosses the famous Forth Bridges along the way. The trial will see autonomous buses operated by Stagecoach Group taking to the roads of Scotland. Now, the rubber is finally ready to meet the road, with the buses imminently ready to hit the public roads. Trials were intended to begin long ago, but faced multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scotland’s autonomous bus trial, known as the CAVForth project, has been a long time in the making, and we first looked at it last year. On Schedule Members of Stagecoach’s Co-Design Panel were invited to an early trial run of the autonomous bus route. Let’s look at how the UK’s first driverless bus project is getting on out in the real world. Now that self-driving buses are finally approaching a basic level of competence, they’re starting to head out to haul passengers from A to B. Transit companies are desperate to get in on the action because it would completely upend their entire existing business structure. It’s not just automakers developing driverless technologies. It’s also ground zero for the first trial of full-sized driverless buses in the United Kingdom. Scotland! It’s the land of tartans, haggis, and surprisingly-warm kilts. It was followed by the last film in Hammer's Dracula series to star Christopher Lee, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, which similarly utilized a modern setting and featured most of the same central characters. It also marked the return of Peter Cushing as Van Helsing for the first time since The Brides of Dracula (1960), and was the first to feature both Lee and Cushing in their respective roles since Dracula (1958). It is the seventh Hammer film featuring Dracula, and the sixth to star Christopher Lee in the title role. Dracula is brought back to life in modern London and preys on a group of young partygoers that includes the descendant of his nemesis, Van Helsing. 1972 had a contemporary setting in an attempt to update the Dracula story for modern audiences. Many older games suddenly refuse to start on Windows 7 because they're integrated into the Games Explorer service and waiting for a response from a Microsoft server that appears to have gone down some time around the 8th of June. For example, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has been pressed over 400 times on vinyl. From the horizontal motion of the stylus, the stereo cartridge senses the channels independently, but a monophonic cartridge picks up left and right as one. Most albums have been issued more than once, resulting in different release versions. Stereo places left and right channels in a V groove, and each side of the groove is 90 degrees from the other. Stereo, which was a big deal when introduced in the late 1950s, was designed for backward compatibility. In a monophonic record, an undulating horizontal groove is cut into the vinyl, providing both frequency and amplitude. The oscillations are converted to electricity, amplified and sent to the speakers. A needle (stylus) is placed in the groove, which oscillates as the platter rotates. With the sound literally "carved" in a spiral groove starting at the outer edge of the platter, the undulations in the groove are an analog of the original acoustic waves. The 45 RPM record holds one song per side, while 33 1/3 RPM "Long Play" records hold an entire album (see LP).

Overall, Olson said the five presentations were more polished than ever before. “You really need to take advice from people, take what you can from that advice, and choose to better your brand or company.” You cannot make every decision yourself you need to work as a team and have the mentors, and you need to be a good leader,” Kraszewski said. “As an entrepreneur, if you don’t take advice from other people, you’re destined for failure.
